The Little Things
what i like about getting up on the weekends is not that i get to sleep in but that i get to wake slowly. once i wake up i usually lie in bed in a half-awake, half-asleep stupor thinking half-baked thoughts. i usually get up when the thought of a cup of coffee and my book sounds like the best thing ever. saturday morning in my sleepy almost-drunken state i found myself contemplating a very tasty treat i had on friday and composing odes to my senses. after i sobered up i decided i'd save myself actually writing lyrical verse but share some of the thoughts anyway.
this was the trigger for this whole exercise: friday i treated myself to a really nice bar of chocolate, no ritter-sport for me! i'd intended to slowly enjoy it later but i impatiently decided to take a small nibble, and then another and then i acknowledged i was just going to eat the thing.
taste
milk chocolate with sea salt - i hadn't realized it was milk chocolate until the first bite. at first i was disappointed - i'm a dark chocolate girl - until the tiny salty bursts. it was like a reeses peanut butter cup without the peanut flavour and 100x tastier.
touch
flannel sheets - when i was 8 or so i discovered flannel sheets. summer or winter i want flannel sheets. it's so soft. my mother tells me that as i baby i also showed a decided preference for flannel. i've also found some clothing recently made of the most amazingly soft fabric. not flannel but still so incredibly soft. i really like the clothing too, but did i mention how soft the fabric is?
i'll take a page from kevin's book and save sight, sound and smell for a different day.

Saving the other three for another day is really a cop-out... that's hardly a page from my book! Each of my introductions is a whole and complete idea by itself. There is no complete list of people to whom I might link on my page that I could include all at once. Mine is journey of discovery!
The senses (at least in the canonical incarnation) are a fixed set of five things. I would submit that either they should be presented individually in a series, one per posting, or all together as an overarching whole.
Truth be told, I think it's fine the way it is... I just like to be negative!
Did you ever notice that even my comments are mostly meta-blogging!
Breaking from my met-blogging tradition, when I was in Taiwan with Susanna, a few times we had fresh fruit that had either been sprinkled with salt, or possibly soaked in light brine. It was hard to pick out at first, it seemed only that the fruit was more flavourful. Upon further tasting, the salt did reveal itself to my tastebuds. If you had asked me before hand if I had thought that salty fruit would be tasty, I probably would have scoffed at the idea, as one might scoff at the idea that one of Mali's main exports might be fish (which was true according to some reference material that I've seen in the past, although the CIA world factbook does not list it as a major export). But it turns out it was quite good.
I'm with you on the flannel sheets.
