Diebstahl
tonight when i got home both of my neighbours were standing on the landing talking. each floor of my building has three apartments. from each landing there is a central, smaller apartment (without a balcony) with a normal door and a larger apartment to the left and right each with double doors. i'm in the middle. this was the first time in 2+ years that i had met both my neighbours simultaneously. it turns out it wasn't a happy coincidence. the neighbours to my right (4.OG rechts) had their apartment broken into today and several things stolen. the thieves also tried the other neighbour's door but were unsuccessful . he had a different lock system. my simple, and therefore more secure, door was untouched.
it turns out that new residents moved into an apartment on the third floor today. the new people aren't suspected but the movers are. the other suspected scenario is that the front door downstairs would have been propped open for the movers and someone wandered in.
i feel sorry for my neighbours but i'm extremely relieved it wasn't me. i don't feel weird about being in my apartment. but i suspect i'll feel weird about leaving it tomorrow.

Just watched a show about home burglary. Part was a "top 10 interesting burglary stories" thing, and part was prevention tips.
They had actually surveyed convicted burglars(!) and found that the number one deterrent was... time. If it looked like it would take a long time to get in and out the thieves don't bother, they look for an easier mark. Most of them said their cut-off was about five minutes.
That's why the first recommendation was to use two locks (preferably different companies). If they can get past one, they can probably get past two, but it's a pain in the butt, and it takes time.
