Mustard Delivery Systems
i've long maintained that sausages are simply mustard transport. this evening on my way from work to a class, i stopped in the train station to grab a bratwurst. i like getting a sausage there because they offer sweet mustard in addition to the generic dijon-like mustard that you get everywhere else. what made today stand out was that i noticed they had beef bratwurst - what looked suspiciously like a beef hot dog that you could get on the streets of toronto. it was great. it did taste like a beef hot dog. i think that sausage and the mustard made my week. a very bold claim for a monday.

Did you once realise that potatoes could be used for mustard delivery? That was during that brief vegetarian phase, I think.
yes, i considered mentioning the potatoes. i still do that actually. but it was before the vegetarian phase because we still lived together on beverley.
Spoons can also be used for mustard delivery...
I used to do that with chocolate frosting; no need for cake when you can just eat a tub of delicious frosting.
And the kids ask me how I got so big... :)
I don't think you can say that something as tasty and flavourful as sausage is simply a mustard delivery mechanism. The sausage doesn't merely highlight the mustard flavour, but instead they each compliment the other. That is the beauty of this age-old classic combination.
Now something that is bland on it's own, IMHO, could more easily be considered merely a mustard delivery mechanism... potatoes would be a good example, although, I myself often think of them as butter and salt delivery mechanisms.
I'd also like to point out, Kristin, that while this is veiled behind a thin veneer of nostalgia for Toronto street meat mixed with a bit of the German cultural vernacular, you are now simply blogging what you had for lunch!
of course the sausage and mustard complement each other. but i don't think that a spoon full of mustard tastes very good, whereas a sausage on its own will taste pretty good. a sausage may not -simply- be a mustard delivery mechanism, but it certainly is delivering mustard. the condiments are the big draw for me.
now spoons are definitely chocolate frosting delivery systems.
i was really trying here not to write anything about sausages that will be naughtily misconstrued.
and kevin, it was my supper not my lunch. ;-)
