Lyrically Challenged

for whatever reason, i have a hard time hearing the lyrics in songs unless they are quite clear. it's not a case of misunderstanding lyrics but simply not quite making out what's being said. i'm not indifferent to the lyrics, my favourite songs often get pushed ahead of other songs i like simply for having cool lyrics.

recently, the song "woke up new" by the mountain goats has been a favourite. the lyrics are easily made out and understood but i've noticed that every time i play it i stop listening to them half-way through the song, to the point that i can't listen to the song without realising that i'm not paying attention to the lyrics. i'll even start listening to it with the intention of really hearing the lyrics this time. it's an interesting conundrum, it's a favourite song but why can't i concentrate on the lyrics?

i looked up the lyrics. it's not terribly long and apparently i'm only dismissing one stanza. huh.
