Getting Around

one week to go! next thursday is my last day of work here in nürnberg. the next day i will drive myself and whatever stuff has accumulated here back to berlin. i'm planning a leisurely drive and if i leave early enough i might stop in dessau and check out some of the UNESCO world heritage bauhaus sites.

last weekend i also drove to and from nürnberg and thus had a car for the entire weekend. i took advantage of having the car and went and did groceries in an area of town i normally don't do groceries in. gudrun and i found grocery heaven but decided it was too expensive and went to the next plus.

on sunday i had what i felt like was a nice slow day. i cleaned up around the house, did laundry, had breakfast, packed my stuff for the week and made plans to go out to eat or see a movie. sometime in the afternoon i decide that instead of taking my local running route, i'd drive down to the schlachtensee in south-west berlin and go running there instead. it was perfect, the weather wasn't too hot or too cool, it wasn't too crowded and there was a delicious autumn smell in the air. when i finished i considered jumping in the lake for about two seconds. instead of taking the autobahn back home i drove on the main streets. the schlachtensee is in a very posh area of town. the lights, the stores, the trees, it's all very elegant. i also drove past the bright lights of potsdamer platz and the new hauptbahnhof. this was quite a contrast to the old courtyards and industrial area in east berlin i found myself checking out with a friend later that evening after supper and deciding that it was too late to see a movie. it was a really relaxed day but i definitely covered some ground.
